Growing during a Dry Spell

Our state has hit the 20 plus days of drought.
Corn should not be this brown in July. The kernels are unformed or dry.
The weatherman speaks of more 100+ degree days and spotty showers. He reminds everyone that the showers are not for everyone in the viewing area.

We’ve seen promising clouds, excitement builds as we think today it’s our turn for relief.Â
Then they move on.
Writing is like this.
Raising children is like this.Â
Life is like this.
There are many times I’ve sent out proposals for books and waited and watched. Nothing happens, but contracts seem to rain on other writers I know, passing by me.
Bringing up my boys I often felt alone, no one else could possibly feel the loneliness I did. I craved a down pour of understanding from another mother. Then it would seem there would be a friend who would understand and then the military would move them far away.
Everyone has droughts in their lives, some are worse than others. Yet, like the corn they struggle to keep going, keep growing, grasping for the tiniest bit of hope.
So how do you stand tall at times like this? Or do you fall to your knees like me asking God for just a drop of hope, help, or understanding?

Diane, it's great to “meet” you. The saying about God helping those who help themselves has always bugged me since God sends the rain for everyone, “the just and the unjust” alike.
Here in Houston, we experienced the worst drought ever for our area last summer. This summer, however, we've been blessed with frequent rain storms. You, too, will experience blessed rain after your personal drought is over.

Our drought category in WI just was upgraded ro extreme. We got some rain last night, but it was too little, too late. The corn and soybeans are pretty much history. Every writer goes through a drought but God is always faithful in the end. I believe we can do nothing apart from God. It is in him and through him t
hat we move and have our being.

My take on God helping those who help themselves is kind of like the way Amy said it. He expects us to do what we can to help ourselves, but He's there to help us, and He's definitely there to help us when we CAN't help ourselves.
I kind of understand the frustrations of sending out manuscripts and hearing nothing, but I can't FULLY understand because I chose to self-publish. However, the principle is the same in all areas of life…the waiting, the frustration, the loss of hope. But, being a Christian, I rely on God to help strengthen me. And I'm a pretty optimistic person most of the time and don't let things get me down. I try to think of all the good things I have to be thankful for. 🙂
Btw, we're also in a drought situation, but we've had a few small storms that brought a little rain. We still need more, though!

I've been the ebook route in 2000-before everyone knew what a reader was. I was a pioneer!
I'm glad you've had a bit of rain. We may get storms today. I'm praying for them. But it is going to be 103 degrees and that takes us to day 24 of over 90 degrees.
Here in Vermont we finally got our break last night with a huge thunderstorm.Thankfully, it's much cooler today. I also reached a point in my writing where the clutter in my mind was neatly tucked away, and my brain is ready to concentrate on what I need to do next.
Actually, what I need to do next is a series of faith-based stories, so God is definitely on my mind! I understand the saying “God helps those who help themselves” because it tells people they're not entitled to sit back and pout and wait for God, or their spouse, or the government, to fix everything. But at the same time, I know that when we are just struggling so much that we feel we can't lift ourselves up, God is there to reach us and help us, sometimes in ways we don't understand, or don't even realize until decades after they happen.
Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that ye may abound in hope, through the power of the Holy Ghost. Romans 15:13

I appreciate your honesty. That's so sad that you were taught that saying. I believe God helps us even when we can't move or ask.
