Favorite Childhood Books a2z: “B” is for Books!
There were probably close to 50 books filling the basket by the time the last piece of paper had been smoothed an saved.
What made this a special shower was the comments made as books were unwrapped. Stories of babies (who are now married and having their own!) favorite books. Some books were new to some of us and of courses we needed to look at them.
It brought up discussions of what our favorite books were as kids. I’d forgotten about Mr. Pudgins by Ruth Christopher Carlsen. I read it often and saved it to read to my children.
What’s it about?
Here’s the back cover copy:
Wild and wacky things happen when Mr. Pudgins comes to sit for John, Pete, and Jane. Strangely enough, they happen only when Mr. Pudgins smokes his pipe.
Faucets run soda pop instead of water. The old Model T suddenly rides on the lake like a speedboad. And playmates step right out of the mirror!
Life with Mr. Pudgins–well, it’s almost like magic. Maybe it is!
As I was leaving the shower there were a few college/highschool girls curled up on the couch reading picture books. One of them was reading Caps for Sale. That was another favorite of mine. She said it was hers too. Her grandmother read it to her.
What was your favorite childhood book?
What a fun idea! I loved Poky Little Puppy, and another Little Golden Book about a stray cat called “Charlie.” But my favorite had to be “The Country Bunny and the Little Gold Shoes.”
Niki, I'll missed out on those two.

Oh, I loved Caps for Sale! And Green Eggs & Ham … And to Think That I Saw it on Mulberry Street. Wow … such great memories!
More good books!

Shelly, I miss reading books in the voice of the characters.

I read books to my kids when they were little. My oldest daughter could recite Yertle the Turtle when she was 2 (my father-in-law was convinced she could read)! My youngest daughter loved Sesame Street magazine (honkers & dingers). And my son loved Morris the Moose (probably because I read it with a Bullwinkle voice). My favorites were Dr. Seuss books, Ten Apples Up On Top and Put Me In the Zoo.
Such a very good idea!
Not knowing any English classics, our son at that age only had Tweenies. Then we read most of the Enid Blyghton's. He still like to read that even though passed the age for that.
Retha, what are Tweenies?

We asked for books for my newest grandbaby's shower, and she got plenty (though never too many, of course!) Sandra Boynton books are our family's new favorites for board books. (With 3 granddaughters 2 and under, board books are our life!) My husband can recite the entire Green Eggs and Ham, so I can sure tell you what HIS fave is. The girls look at him like he's crazy and giggle along with him. Such fun.
I knew the Sandra Boynton books were popular but she only received 2 which surprised me.
I vaguely remember Mr. Pudgins which means I didn't read it to my kids…how could I miss that one?!
I LOVE this idea for a baby shower!! It's got to be the best yet!! Will have to remember for a grandbaby shower. …YEARS down the road still! LoL
Patty, it was fun. The host also read us a story. She used the Poky Little Puppy as the guest book. We all signed the front and back inside cover.
