Happy Birthday J.R. Tolkien
Can you imagine being told you have to read J. R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings Series? For a grade? That’s what happened to me in college. I wasn’t sure I’d like them since I wasn’t into the fantasy genre. I was wrong. Bilbo Baggins was so likeable in the Hobbit I couldn’t stop reading.
I devoured those books.
Later I bought the audio books for my youngest son who didn’t care for reading but loved listening to stories. When the first movie came out I had a willing partner to go with me. We saw all of them together. Now he’s in Chicago so unless I can get my husband to go see the Hobbit with me, I’ll be hitting an afternoon viewing soon, alone.
Meanwhile I still get Hobbit type cravings for meals at all times of the day.
Can you imagine J.R. Tolkien –a lover and student of language had already made up a language at the age of seven? I wonder how his mother understood him?
Before we sing Happy Birthday to J. R. Tolkien (you are singing with me right?) I’d like to leave you with this quote from the great man.
“There is some good in this world, and it’s worth fighting for.”
– The Two Towers
Do you read in the fantasy genre? What authors would you recommend?

I love that you mentioned the meals. Our dog gets his first breakfast around five every morning. Then an hour later he is begging for second breakfast. He’s like a little hobbit.
Chris,
You could say he even has the hairy toes!
Blessings,
Diana
I am not a fan of either fantasy or sci fi, but I ended up writing a novel that has a little of both. Go figure.
Yes, I do like my novel. And I do like C.S. Lewis and Tolkien, for sure.
And, Diana, Ted Dekker scares me! I think the whole genre is full of weirdness, including us readers~
Ginny, being a writer is sci-fi. 🙂
Blessings,
Diana
I am a huge fan of CS Lewis. I got into the Narnia series as a kid, but did not enjoy the movies as an adult.
Joanne, do you suppose it’s because as a child your imagination is bigger and brighter and can’t compare to what comes out in movie form? I know I’m ususally disappointed in the movie if I’ve read the book. Especially if it’s one I’ve loved as a child.
Blessings,
Diana
That’s my kind of school assignment! My aunt recommended the Lord of the Rings to me. I was skeptical at first, but I totally fell in love with those stories! I loved the movies too.
Brittany, it’s so fun when someone recommends books that truly are good.
Yes, it was a great assignment!

Happy Birthday J. R. Tolkien.
Recently I read the trilogy Black, Red and White (busy with White) by Ted Dekker. It was awesome. The ending in Red was so fantastic. The book had me thinking for days on end about Jesus and his Bride.
Another interesting read was Illusions by Frank Peretti. The book made think to what extent is God and our relationship with Him a reality for us? God is Spirit, is He real to us? In other words do we have a personal relationship with God or is it an illusion.
Yes!!!! The Dekker series was another set that took me to all kinds of places. I really liked it. Peretti scares me. 🙂
