SCRIVENER FOR FOODIES

I was even more excited when Diana asked me to share a little about it here. (Thanks for having me!)
The template is set up so that you can label each recipe with a cook time (e.g. 0-30 mins, 30-60 mins), and a ranking (from “Untried” up to five stars). Of course, you can change these fields. I could see tracking difficulty level, recipe source, number of servings, or best season to make.
Anything you can’t put into those two fields can go in the Synopsis section, the Document Notes, or Keywords. In fact, keywords are already in place for things like allergens, cooking method, cuisine type, holiday, and season.
If you copy a recipe from the web, you can jot down the address in the Synopsis or Notes, or you could add it in the document References. If you have the Mac version, check out the Custom Meta-Data tab. It’s set up for things like Source, Calories, Fat, etc.
You don’t have to be writing a cookbook to apply all the great features of Scrivener—organization, labeling, easy searches, a place for notes and research—to your recipe box. But, when you’re done getting it all sorted out, it’ll be a cinch to share with friends and family.
And speaking of recipes, here’s one that I love to whip up on a busy evening when I don’t have a lot of time. This family favorite is easily adapted for many types of diets, including our transition to plant-based meals last year. Enjoy!
Servings: ~ 8 cups
Ingredients
½ c chopped onion
1 can corn, undrained
2 cans diced tomatoes, undrained
1 can diced green chiles, undrained
1 can Ranch Style beans, undrained (or an extra can of pinto beans)
1 can Pinto beans, undrained
2 tsp liquid smoke (optional)
1 lb browned ground beef or chicken strips (optional)
Seasoning mix (see below) or 1 packet taco seasoning and 1 packet ranch dressing mix
Seasoning mix:
2 tsp paprika
1 ½ tsp salt
1 ½ tsp onion powder
1 tsp. chili powder
1 1/2 tsp. cumin
1 tsp garlic powder
1 tsp dried parsley
½ tsp dried dill
½ tsp dried basil
½ tsp black pepper
Directions
1. If desired, sauté the onion in a large pot before adding the other ingredients.
2. Mix all ingredients together in the pot and simmer until heated through. If it’s thicker than you’d like, add water ¼ cup at a time. The longer it simmers, the better it tastes.
3. Serve with tortilla chips or torn up corn tortillas.
NOTE: Can also be made in a crockpot on high setting for four hours or low setting for eight hours.

October is National Movie Month
Have You Watched a Movie This Month?
There’s not much time left this month to participate in National Movie Month.
Did you go to the movies this month? Will you?
Or
Do you watch movies at home?
Which do you prefer?
I enjoy watching at home on my couch, covered with my blanket, and a bowl of popcorn on my lap.
Since there is still time to take part in National Movie Month and the entertainment envelope is about empty I’m going to plan an evening of movie watching.
It might be fun to make the atmosphere more like the new ‘Bistro Movie Theaters’ that are offered in our area.

Then the tough question. What do we watch?
MOVIE LIST:
Open Range–for the 78th time (Hubby’s favorite)
followed by
Sweet Home Alabama–for the 78th time (one of my favorites)
Should I find a classic movie or snag a newer one from directtv?
Any suggestions? Tick-tock time is running out.

Writing romance is a fun way to make a living
and in romance it’s all about THE KISS.
The first KISS that is. What’s leading up to two people risking a chance of catching a cold, a deadly disease?
Wait, back up. I write romance, not end of the world deadly disease kills us all books!
THE KISS starts way before the couple are standing–or reclining in water like the photo above. It starts from the moment one person realizes they have feelings for the other.
The angst of, “Do they like, love or only want friendship from me.”
The thrill of the, being so close their lips almost touch and someone or something interrupts THE KISS.
It has to happen at the right moment in romantic movies and books. If it happens to soon writers lose their audience.
Think about some of your favorite sitcoms where it is obvious two characters belong together. I’m thinking of Jess and Nick, on New Girl. I just know they belong together. I want them to KISS. But as soon as they do the show is going to lose me as a viewer. The tension between them will be different–over.UNLESS, the writers find a way to separate them fast and we’re left wondering if it was really THE IMPORTANT ONCE IN A LIFETIME KISS.
In A Bride’s Dilemma in Friendship, Tennessee THE KISS doesn’t happen for a long time and when it does Heaven and Travis can’t seem to find time alone to discuss it. So as a reader you want to keep reading to see if it’s going to happen again. Does it? I’m not telling. 🙂
What romantic movie or romance book have you read where THE KISS took your breath away?

Who Lives on Your Desk?
After reading Karen Ball’s article, Who Lives on Your Desk? over on the Steve Laube Agency blog, I thought I’d share my answer with you.
Two monitors and an iPad may be overkill but sometimes I wish I had four monitors!
I have a book about Ghost Towns that belongs to Sara, my daughter-in-law that I’m using for research.
Jesus Calling by Sarah Young is my first read of the morning.
Sell Your Book like Wildfire by Ron Eager with hundreds of flagged pages. Someday I will find time to do all of those suggestions.
A clipboard to make sure I get all the blogging done this month.
My mouse and of course, a pen.
A jar of marbles made into a lamp. I need to put a new bulb in it. I keep forgetting about that.
So tell me what do you have on your desk?
